Braces and other orthodontic appliances put a mild pressure on your teeth as they effectively shift them into position.
Mild pain and potential sores are normal during the first hours and even for a few days after braces have been placed. This, however, can be minimised along with any other problems which might arise.
Sore Teeth
As the teeth begin to move into position, they can become sore. This usually starts 24 hours after braces have been positioned, and may last up to 3 or 4 days later. To relieve the discomfort, we advise the use of mild painkillers such as paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Making dietary adjustments, such as switching to soft food can also help reduce the pressure placed on your teeth.
Sore Lips and Cheeks
Lips and cheeks may become sore during the first few weeks of treatment, due to the brace and wire rubbing on them, causing ulcers to form. To lessen the discomfort, place orthodontic wax on the offending bracket. Ulcers happen less frequently as time goes by because the lips and cheeks become accustomed to the braces.
