When undergoing orthodontic treatment, good oral hygiene is of primary importance.
Tooth decay, cavities, gum recession, gingivitis and bad breath are the most common dental problems associated with improper and irregular dental hygiene. You can be affected oral diseases at any point of your life, but this risk can be increased when you are wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances.
While you are more vulnerable to such diseases, it is advised that you practice consistent and thorough dental hygiene. Left untreated, tooth and gum problems can result in further tooth damage – defeating the very reason for undertaking orthodontic treatment.
Brushing
Brush your teeth at least 3 times a day, preferably after meals and before going to bed. Use a soft-bristles toothbrush, as it is more effective in cleaning, massaging, and protecting your gums. You may also use an orthodontic toothbrush which is especially designed to clean areas of your teeth that are blocked by brackets and wire.
When brushing, move the toothbrush backwards and forwards and in small circular motions above and below the braces. Aim the toothbrush towards the wires and towards the gums.
Flossing
Hard to reach places between the teeth cannot be cleaned by brushing alone.
Floss as least once a day, before going to sleep to remove plaques and food debris.
Flossing may prove to be difficult if you are wearing braces, but it can and should be done.
Ask your orthodontist about the right flossing technique and special flossing products available for you to use during your brace wear.
Other Tools
Oral care can sometimes be challenging during orthodontic treatment. Tools such as oral irrigators, antibacterial rinses, fluoride rinsed, tooth mousse, single-turf brushes and disclosing solutions may be required.
